Bodegas Ondarre were created with the aim of making wines with a clear typical personality reflecting the town of Viana. An identity which is defined by the diversity of the soils and the distribution of the small, old vineyards on the slopes which climb up towards the Sierra. Low-yielding vines, with careful selection of the grapes. Only in this way is it possible to achieve wines which are the reflection of a terroir which expresses itself through the climate, soil and the handiwork of man.

Bodegas Ondarre was founded in 1985in Viana (DOCaRioja), the fruit of the interest of the Limousin Ucin family to develop the concept of a terroir wine in a zone with a uniquely typical style, determined by the diversity of soils and the arrangement of the small and ancient vineyard plots on slopes climbing up towards the Sierra de Codés.
The name of the bodega pays homage to the family country house dating from 1450 which is located in Azpeitia. Their philosophy is to achieve wines with very special characteristics which try to reflect the full expression of each variety with the attributes contributed by the zone that the vines come from.
The secret of a great wine is having the best grapes. So the Bodegas Ondarre vineyards are located around Viana, where the climate conditions, soils, terrain and growing practices are the key factors in producing wines which faithfully reflect the exceptional “terroir”.
What makes this district special is the presence of 7 minority soil-types described by the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja, with south-facing vineyards at a height of over 500metres.Low-yielding bush vines which are over 30 years old are chosen, growing in key soils and with a very careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard.
These are the features which give the fruit and the wines the particular complexity and personality of Bodegas Ondarre.
The character of Bodegas Ondarre comes from its soils. That’s why, once the best plots have been selected for making its stable of wines, the grapes are harvested by hand. On the sorting table any berries which do not meet thee required quality standards are removed and then vinification takes place in the traditional way, using new French-oak (25%) and American Missouri-oak barrels 75%).
The location of the vines, the climate conditions of the district and the composition of the soils give the grapes special characteristics, thereby ensuring that the wines from Bodegas Ondarre have a distinctive character of their own. The expression of diversity.
Ondarre wines reflect the virtues of the land in which the vines are planted, each with its distinctive character and with the personal touch of the Bodega in the winemaking process, creating a unique experience for the senses. All the wines are produced in limited quantities, thus ensuring the high quality of the wines.
